When I was 14 I had to make a tumultuous decision in my life, whether I was going to be a jazz piano player or an artist. And at the tender age of 14 I listened to a recording of Art Tatum, and I said I think I’ll be an artist because I could never play like Art Tatum. (Playing the piano in the background) Enough!

It wasn’t until I was 70 years old that I got to go in the Uffizi in Florence and see the Botticellis. Thank Christ I never saw those when I was 14 because I’d be digging bloody ditches.
