In 1960, we were up at Emma Lake, and we had a face-to-face for two weeks, with the nearest thing we’ll ever get to God on earth - the New York painter Barnett Newman. (Playing interview with Barnett Newman in background from A World Away by Mark Wihak) He was like Jehovah bringing the tablets off the mountain. He was the real thing. He imbued us with a sense of purpose that you couldn’t believe. I came back and I was speaking with Cliff Wiens and I said “Cliff,” I said, “Fantastic!” And Cliff had heard it all before. And he said, “Oh, Ted, give it three months for the shine to wear off.” How wrong he was. The shine never wore off.
