Marsha Kennedy - Stilled Lives, Setting #10

The bird in Setting 10 is a pine siskin. The white also can refer to the table but I also felt it could refer to a winter landscape. In Rachel Carson’s book Silent Spring, I really considered that silent spring, like we’re locked in a freeze or everything’s quiet. But it wasn’t…I mean there’s a darkness there, but there’s also a meditative quality about the work. There’s a beauty in looking at the birds - they look like they’re sleeping; they don’t look like they’ve been physically harmed. So they become these beautiful delicate creatures in the painting, but there is definitely a very somber quality to them. Setting 10 and the whole series making reference to not only the winter landscape or horizon but to the table…all of us have to eat to survive. And it’s at the table which is sort of the leveling field between all creatures, whether it be what they’re going to eat in the trees…it’s the eating. For us it’s usually, we consider eating as a kind of a ritual where we like to join with family and friends. But there’s also something kind of sacred about coming together at the table as well. Not that I am religious or say prayers before eating, but I really do believe we should be thanking what we have and also consider where it’s all coming from. So again the reference to the table is…the pesticides that we use are for food crops and they end up on our table. So there is that kind of moment of quiet to consider what we’re taking, what we’re giving, what we’re getting, where we’re going, that balance in nature and again for all creatures - can we survive? Is there something to eat?
