Mary Longman

About the Artist

Mary Longman is Saulteaux, from the Gordon First Nation in Saskatchewan.  Mary Longman’s Aboriginal name, Ask-Pigesiwiskwew, was given to her by her great-grandmother. At an early age her family moved to the city and she was placed in foster care. She never knew her family until she was fifteen years old.

She has studied at insitutions across Canada, from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver, British Columbia, to the Nova Scotia School of Art and Design in Halifax, Nova Scotia.  She is currently (2007) living in Victoria, British Columbia and working on a PhD in curriculum and instruction at the University of Victoria. Her sculptural works, drawings, paintings and graphics have been exhibited in many prominent galleries and museums.
